one heck of a sambo

seriously, sandwiches have never really been my first love. oh, yes, i do love a good vegemite sandwich (only on the freshest of white breads, butter & that black goodness). and yes, there are those fond memories of my mother who would send me to school with faces on my sandwich (currents for eyes, tomato for the mouth, carrot for the hair. and that was even in my senior year!).

but have i found the sandwich bar for you. thankyou earl canteen (like the earl of sandwich... geddit?) for dreaming up a sanwhich that encompasses crisp skin free-range pork belly, apple, cabbage & fennel coleslaw, wilted silverbeet on a baguette. yes it tasted every bit as good as it sounds! if you are in melboune (heck, if you are in a 300km radius of melbourne) do yourself a favour and get. there. now.

quick thanks to melbourne gastronome for sending me in the right direction.

radio silence

... but radio silence for a Good Reason, friends! frogs & snails & puppy-dogs' tails!

we've been busy getting to know this little man. and he's been busy getting to know us.

life is grand.

wedding fever...

for most of my life, i really did think that i was (middle) named after our queen. but what else was a 10 year old to think?

so is it any wonder that i'm getting a bit excited for this royal wedding?

my girlfriends and i are catching up for wedding party. we thought it would be a great idea to wear our wedding dresses. but there is no way i'll be fitting into mine anytime soon! instead, we're going to bring along our wedding photos to remind ourselves about our big day.

we'll eat some etons mess, drink a few cups of tea... and be thankful for our very own prince charmings!

call me a tragic, but i saw this tea towel on etsy and thought it too beautiful to pass up.

tell me, will you be watching?

{cooking} up a storm

ah yes, blogging. i think i've almost forgotten what that is (sorry!).

you see, i've been cooking. cooking up a storm. it's a pretty spectacular recipe, and this bun needs to be in the oven for 9 long months. i'm loving every second, soaking it all up. now, never fear, i'm not going to go all, you know, maternal on you, but i might just go missing every now and again. sporadic is a word i feel comfortable with right now.

and in the meantime, i'll leave you with some very cute things.
things my paypal account won't thank me for.
but the new addition might!

baby bear hat (this one kills me. totally)

some light relief...

...for your lazy weekend entertainment, can i suggest you open this little video and unashamedly have a little giggle at this cute porcupine who thinks he's a puppy. (thanks Alyson!)

because it's good just to let out some laughter for no reason!

happy weekend!

(incidentally, this is how my puppy is spending the weekend...
...what a life they lead!)

these are trying times...

summer in queensland is usually a wet one... but this is just something else! our city, the 3rd largest in Australia, is expected to flood significantly in the next few days. tens of thousands of people affected.

while my home is not in a risk area (at this stage) my workplace will quite possibly go under. what that means i don't know. i don't think anyone knows right at the moment... i think the whole city is in a state of limbo as we wait for, well, goodness knows what!

getting my head around blogging with all this going on just isn't working. i know brisbane is just a small part of the whole emergency state of queensland. so far, many people have been generous with what they can give. i'd encourage anyone to help out people who have lost everything...

i'm also thinking of anna from absolutely beautiful things, who's shop is not far from my workplace. also, i'm sending thanks to the emergency services - from top to bottom - for what is a seemingly endless (and dirty) job.

but it's not just floods that are devastating... one of my favourite bloggers out of melbourne - jane from my pear tree house - has had her life shaken upside down in the last few weeks from other natural causes. i'm sending prayers of strength down to her! "stay positive" is her message - what an inspiration!

life is a precious thing, isn't it?
